Background of the Study
Cultural festivals are vital to community identity and heritage; however, they can also perpetuate gendered norms that impact women’s rights. In Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, traditional festivals often reinforce gender stereotypes by assigning specific roles to women and men (Amalachukwu, 2023). These events, while celebrated for their cultural significance, sometimes restrict women’s social and economic participation. The symbolism embedded in these festivals may limit women’s agency and reinforce patriarchal values (Chinonso, 2024). Recent studies have begun to question how cultural expressions intersect with gender rights, suggesting that reinterpretation of these festivals could promote gender equity (Uzoamaka, 2025). This study critically examines the dual role of cultural festivals as sites of both heritage preservation and gender contestation. By analyzing festival practices and participant narratives, the research seeks to uncover how cultural symbolism influences women’s rights and identify potential pathways for reform (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Idemili North, cultural festivals that propagate traditional gender roles negatively affect the rights and empowerment of women. The rigid gender assignments during these events restrict women’s social participation and perpetuate inequalities (Ngozi, 2024). Such practices have hindered progress towards gender equality and limited opportunities for women to assert their rights. The lack of critical inquiry into the impact of cultural festivals on women’s rights necessitates this study, which aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these dynamics and propose culturally sensitive interventions (Chiamaka, 2025).
